As Commander of the 509th Composite Group, Col. Tibbets organized, trained and led the hand- selected crew members that comprised the world’s first atomic bomb wing. Today the Legacy of this famous unit lives on with the newly organized 509th Bomb Wing and today’s successor to the legendary B-29, the B-2 Spirit. It is only fitting that Gen. Tibbets’ grandson, Captain Paul W Tibbets IV, is building on this tradition as a mission pilot who flew the B-2 Spirit assigned to the 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman AFB, Missouri. |
